Subject Knowledge

Enhancement Courses

SKE programmes are flexible, FREE, designed to meet the needs of all applicants accepted onto a teacher training course, and are delivered by real teaching professionals, who “do the job” on a daily basis, in a real school environment.

As a minimum, SKE programmes are the equivalent of eight weeks full time study.

Available either face to face or distance learning, the length of your course will depend on whether you need to top up your subject knowledge or need something more in-depth. Eligible trainees may also receive a generous Bursary whilst they train.  SKE courses can be undertaken either in advance of your teacher training course or in parallel.  The only condition is that you complete your SKE before you are awarded Qualified Teacher Status.

SKE Programmes are currently available in the following subjects:

Maths

Primary Maths

Physics

Chemistry

Biology

Geography

Computer Studies

English

MFL - you can do two SKEs in this if you need to teach two languages.

D&T (Food and Resistant Materials)

If you wish to train to teach PE, given that it is such a competitive market place, it is worth considering other subjects in which SKE is available if you have strong subject knowledge on which to build (either degree content or a good A Level pass).

If PE is all you ever want to do, there is now an option to train to teach PE with an EBacc subject (all the above subjects and History).  It is possible to register to undertake a short 8 week SKE in that subject.  However, this is approved by the NCTL on a case by case basis and there is no ITT Bursary connected to it - you would still be training to teach PE.

It is up to you where you undertake your SKE.  There are university providers who will deliver it.  Within our partnership of schools, SKE programmes are delivered by the CAT Teaching School, The Polesworth School.
