School-led Routes into Teaching

The Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship

A group of experienced schools and teachers have led the design of this postgraduate teacher training course. This programme offers a combination of classroom teaching, practical learning and a salary.

During this programme, you’ll receive a combination of classroom teaching and 20% of your time is allocated to off-the-job training as you work towards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).  In addition, you’ll be required to undertake an end-point assessment (EPA) in the final term to ensure you’re on track to be an effective newly qualified teacher. Details on how to apply to this route can be found here.

is designed by groups of schools in partnership with a university or a school-centred initial teacher training (SCITT) provider.  The schools recruit you as a trainee with a job in mind just for you. This is a popular choice for those who hope to secure a role in the network of schools where they train.

There are two routes through School Direct - self funded route - i.e. you fund the course yourself, but have access to generous grants and bursaries to help you, and School Direct - salaried.  To access this course, you will have been working for a minimum of three years and looking to change career.  The salary at this level is usually point 1 of the Unqualified Teacher Scale (which is around £16,000).  The school pays for your tuition fees, but the university may have other fees on top of this.  You would have to check this with the university directly.  As a School Direct Salaried trainee you are an employee of the school and subject to paying tax, NI etc as you would in any other salaried position.   For more information on this check out the  Get into Teaching website.
